Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has this afternoon provided updates on the fitness of both Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, ahead of the Blaugrana’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with AS Roma tomorrow night.
The Giallorossi are set to travel to Catalunya as major underdogs in their tie with La Liga leaders Barca, with Eusebio Di Francesco’s men having dispatched of Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk in nail-biting fashion in the competition’s last-16.
The capital outfit’s positive recent streak of results came to an end at the weekend, though, with Roma only able to come away from Bologna’s Renato Dall’Ara with a point.
Barca, meanwhile , put Premier League champions Chelsea to the sword by 4 goals to 1 over the two legs of their own Champions League last-16 tie, with the Blaugrana having staged a last-gasp recovery to snatch a draw away to Sevilla on Saturday night (courtesy of super-sub Lionel Messi).
Speaking in a press conference earlier today, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde was questioned on the fitness of Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, both of whom have been suffering with respective injuries of late.
And there was positive news for both Barca stars, with Valverde revealing:
‘Messi? If he’s called-up, he’ll play.’
‘With respect to the previous days he’s better. Busquets trained for an important part of the session yesterday, and I think he’ll be better today and tomorrow.’
‘He’s an important player for us, he and Messi are fundamental players.’
Roma, meanwhile, will have to do without the services of winger Cengiz Under, who failed to make the club’s squad for tomorrow night after picking up a knee injury whilst on international duty with Turkey.
