Uruguay sent out a statement in their Copa América opener on Sunday.

They took on Ecuador in Belo Horizonte and were expected to start with a win but did so in some style.

They took the lead after just six minutes through Nicolás Lodeiro’s sumptuous outside of the foot half-volley.

Then, Ecuador were reduced to ten men; José Quintero dismissed for an elbow on Lodeiro.

That was in the 25th minute and from then on it was not really a contest.

Edinson Cavani made it 2-0 shortly after with an overhead kick quickly followed by Luis Suárez’s customary goal as he tapped home from close range.

3-0 at the break; the first time Uruguay had scored three in the first half of a Copa game for 60 years.

The second half was a complete non-event with the match played at walking pace for long spells.

There was another goal though, Ecuador failed to clear and the unfortunate Arturo Mina scored an own goal late on.

4-0 to Uruguay it finished at the Mineirão and Óscar Tabárez’s side will be confident of another win.

A day later, Japan were on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline but that does not reflect how the game went.

The Samurai Blue were beaten by Chile in São Paulo but the scoreline is very harsh on the Asian side.

Japan missed three superb chances at 2-0 before conceding twice late on.

Chile were simply ruthless.

18 of Japan’s squad are 22 year old or younger as they’re using this tournament as preparation for the Olympics in Japan next summer.

Hajime Moriyasu’s young side are likely to be taught another lesson by another battle hardened South American side here.

Uruguay should make it two wins out of two.
