Howe’s task laid bare as Newcastle set unwanted Premier League record in Brighton draw

Howe’s task laid bare as Newcastle set unwanted Premier League record in Brighton draw

Big task ahead for Eddie Howe

Newcastle United can come away from their travels tonight feeling some semblance of satisfaction after the Magpies fought to a 1-1 draw with Graham Potter’s Brighton on the south coast in front of new boss Eddie Howe.

Howe was spotted in the stands alongside Amanda Staveley to watch his new charges secure a share of the spoils away from St. James’ Park, and while a point earned is always positive, the reality behind the club’s failure to win again spoke to just how difficult a task the former Bournemouth headmaster has ahead of him.

According to OptaJoe, Newcastle is now embarking on their longest run without a win to begin a season in the club’s history.

The Magpies are officially the only club in the Premier League without a win to their name in the 2021-22 season, after Norwich earned all three points on their travels when they beat fellow promoted outfit Brentford 2-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium.

While Howe would have welcomed the chance to analyze his new club from the stands, the harsh reality behind his appointment will soon become apparent as he takes up his post on the touchline against the Bees after the international break.

Newcastle to sanction spending for reputable targets

No one expects Eddie Howe to arrive at the club and change the Magpies’ fortunes on the pitch at the snap of a finger.

The Public Investment Fund-led consortium ownership group must fully back the Bournemouth icon from the outset of his tenure, and look set to do so as links continue to surface regarding how the club intends to navigate the transfer market.

Barcelona shot-stopper and German international Marc-André ter Stegen is the latest player to be linked with interest from Newcastle, while Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi is also on the list.

It is unclear if big wages will be enough to convince players to join the new project on Tyneside given the state of the club, but being the richest in the world should still be a gateway for Newcastle to push themselves up the ladder if the right decisions are made.
