Arsenal manager Unai Emery has this afternoon spoken out over the rumours that the Gunners are eyeing a move for Sevilla star Ever Banega.
Banega, a 30-year-old Argentinian midfielder, has spent the majority of his club career plying his trade in Spain.
The all-action South American has lined out for all of Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, with Banega having returned for his second stint with the latter of these sides in the summer of 2017, following a solitary campaign on the books of Inter Milan.
The Boca Juniors youth product acts as an all-round midfield general, with Banega possessing both the tenacity and aggression of a defensive-midfielder with the creativity and goalscoring touch of a more attack-minded player.
This is perfectly highlighted by the 65-time capped Argentinian international’s stats to this point in the current campaign. Across all competitions, Banega has racked up 7 goals and 3 assists, to go along with 8 yellow cards.
However, despite the experienced midfielder having played an integral role in Sevilla’s impressive season, Banega has been heavily-linked with a potential departure from the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium of late.
Premier League giants Arsenal are rumoured to be expressing a serious interest in his signature.
In fact, Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo went as far as to suggest that the Gunners proposed a big-money contract to Banega earlier today:
Estadio Deportivo can exclusively confirm that #AFC have made a formal contract offer for Ever Banega: 3yrs with an optional 4th; £7m PA in wages. Player is considering the proposal which took him by surprise as it meets his ‘impossible’ demands.https://t.co/bRBSwazDqX

‘Can’t say more’
As such, speaking in a press conference a short time ago, Arsenal boss Unai Emery was inevitably questioned on the links between his side and Sevilla’s star midfielder.
However, the Spanish tactician, who actually took charge of Banega during his time spent managing Sevilla from 2013 to 2016, was coy on a potential swoop for the experienced South American:
‘I know this player; he is a very good player. Now I can’t say more.’
Emery also confirmed, though, that Arsenal are only on the lookout for potential loan deals this month:
‘We can’t sign with payment for one player. We can only loan players. The club is working. The club is telling me each moment that different situations can happen for recruitment.’
