UEFA announce Champions League Squad of the Season – Liverpool lead the way, Ajax 2nd

UEFA’s choice of the 20 standout performers from across the 2018/19 Champions League campaign have this afternoon been announced.

Liverpool triumphant

After 9 months of the finest footballers from around the globe showcasing their talents across Europe, the Champions League’s showpiece matchup was held in Madrid last night.

Premier League giants Liverpool and Tottenham went head to head in the event, for the right to be crowned the best side on the continent.

Both clubs of course booked their respective spots in the Wanda Metropolitano clash by means of stunning second-leg turnarounds in the competition’s semi-finals.

Liverpool overturned a 3-goal first-leg deficit to put Spanish champions Barcelona to the sword by 4 goals to nil at Anfield, before Tottenham followed suit in Amsterdam the following evening to push past Ajax in the most dramatic of circumstances.

When all was said and done, though, there could only be one side crowned European champions.

And, after falling at the final hurdle in last year’s showpiece, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were not to be denied this time around, clinching the Champions League trophy for the 6th time in the club’s history.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi either side of half-time eventually proved the difference in a cagey affair.

Messi, Ronaldo & van Dijk headline star-studded TOTS

And Liverpool’s triumph in the Spanish capital has since been reflected in UEFA’s Squad of the Season for the tournament.

The Merseysiders are represented by 6 players, the most of any side, with the likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane deserved inclusions.

Next on the list come the European campaign’s surprise package, Ajax, who, after coming to within seconds of a final berth, see 5 of the club’s stars named by UEFA.

Runners-up Tottenham have a trio of players make the cut, with Premier League champions Manchester City next up with a pair of representatives.

Finally, the world’s finest, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, take their annual place in the squad, with highly-regarded Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele rounding out the side.
