England have just beaten Sweden 2-0 in the quarter-final of the 2018 World Cup and one man is once again getting everyone talking. That man is England’s number one, Jordan Pickford.
England’s number one spot
England’s goalkeeping situation was somewhat questionable going into the tournament. Joe Hart had been England’s number one for some years heading into Russia.
But after a poor Euro 2016 and subsequent poor seasons in the Serie A and West Ham, Joe Hart was dropped by Gareth Southgate.
The three keepers Southgate chose to take was Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and Nick Pope.
None of which has any real international experience and both Pickford and Butland didn’t have the best seasons for their clubs.
Pickford would be given England’s number one shirt for the tournament and it was clear Southgate was going all in on him.
However, after failing to keep clean sheets against Tunisia, Panama and making a poor save for the goal vs Belgium, Pickford was still coming under fire.
Columbia and Sweden
However, vs Columbia, England would go all the way to penalties and thanks to Jordan Pickford penalty save, England were able to go on an win their first World Cup penalty shoot-out ever.
As a result, Pickford came into this game vs Sweden full of confidence, he made countless great saves and kept his first clean sheet of the tournament and Twitter has been full of praise for the young England keeper.
