Barcelona dumped out the Champions League by Roma

Roma dump Barcelona out of the Champions League: Twitter goes mad

Roma 3-0 Barcelona

After Barcelona’s 4-1 win at the Nou Camp last week, few could have predicted that Barcelona would be crashing out of the Champions League.

The Catalan club have not won the European Cup since 2015 but have been superb this season and have been seen as one of the favourites from the start.

Barcelona even equalled a Spanish record of 38 games unbeaten at the weekend but they couldn’t deliver in the Italian capital tonight.

Could Ernesto Valderde be under pressure now?

Up until this game, Ernesto Valverde had put together a faultless season.

Winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey will undoubtedly soften the blow, but this result and performance will be remembered for some time.

Full credit to Roma, who have pulled off the impossible. The odds were stacked against the Italians before kick-off.

Before kick-off: Roma were 4/1 to win the 2nd leg. Roma were 28/1 to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals.

Barcelona were 4/6 to win this second leg tie. And, 1/150 to qualify for the final four of Europe’s premier competition.

What happened?

Nobody predicted this.

Its shocking to think that Barcelona managed to surrender a 3 goal lead considering how well they have been playing this season.

Barcelona famously knocked PSG out of the Champions League last season despite being 4-0 down from the first leg and they were given a taste of their own medicine tonight.

The goal that sealed the tie

Konstantinos Manolas popped up with the vital goal with just 8 minutes remaining on the clock.

The Greek defender was clearly delighted with his goal and it’s fair to say that his celebration was one of the most passionate in football history.

That was one of the best nights in Champions League history.
