Why Everton failed to move James Rodriguez on during summer window

An insight into the key reasons behind Everton’s failure to part ways with out-of-favour midfielder James Rodriguez before the transfer window slammed shut last week has been forthcoming on Sunday.

James back in form

Colombian international Rodriguez of course only made the move to Goodison Park last summer.

On the back of another testing season on the books of Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid, during which he struggled for game-time, the 30-year-old opted to try his hand in the Premier League for the first time.

And the ensuing campaign, in turn, proved largely positive.

Whilst he was forced to deal with a number of niggling fitness issues, Rodriguez, when fit, slotted into Everton’s midfield with ease, adding some much-needed guile to the club’s ranks.

All told, in 26 appearances across all competitions, the talented South American racked up 6 goals and 9 assists.

Million pound (per month) man

Rodriguez’s Everton switch developing in the first place, though, only came about due to the persistence of Carlo Ancelotti, who had previously overseen some of the finest form of the Colombian’s career whilst in Madrid.

In turn, upon the tactician bringing an abrupt end to his Goodison stint early in June, it came as little surprise when speculation surrounding Rodriguez’s future quickly followed.

A whole host of potential landing spots were floated, with reports earlier this week having even pointed towards a surprise move to Turkey, on the back of the English transfer window slamming shut:

This comes with Rodriguez yet to be afforded a single minute of playing time by new boss Rafael Benitez.

In the end, however, evidently, club and player alike were left with little choice but to continue their partnership into the coming months.

And, as outlined above, on Sunday, an insight into precisely why has been forthcoming online.

The info comes courtesy of Football Insider, who cite Rodriguez’s wages as the deciding factor in ultimately scaring away any and all interested parties:

‘An Everton source has told Football Insider the enormous deal handed to Rodriguez, 30, amounts to more than £1million each month.’

It is added that Benitez had in fact given his full backing to the midfielder’s sale, only for his wishes to be quashed by the unwillingness of James’ suitors to fork out over £250,000-per-week on his services.
