West Ham’s stance on January move for Liverpool star revealed after injury setback

West Ham’s stance on January move for Liverpool star revealed after injury setback

West Ham’s defence hit hard

West Ham have had a superb start to the 2021/22 campaign.

The Hammers are currently 4th in the Premier League and have picked up some impressive wins over Liverpool and Chelsea.

However, both of those wins would come at a price to their backline. Firstly, vs Liverpool, Angelo Ogbonna would suffer a knee injury, which has ruled him out for the season:

Then, after seeing off Chelsea this past weekend, Kurt Zouma suffered an injury which could keep him out for up to 12 weeks.

West Ham eyeing centre-back cover

With West Ham fighting for a top-four spot and still going strong in Europe, the Hammers cannot really afford to have two key senior central defenders out of action.

So, the report from the Evening Standard recently which claimed West Ham had green-lit a January move for a centre-back was not at all surprising.

One of the names said to be of interest to West Ham in the report from the ES was Liverpool’s Nathaniel Phillips.

Phillips had been on the fringes of Jurgen Klopp’s side for much of this season, but reminded everyone of his quality with an impressive showing vs AC Milan earlier this month.

However, it was then reported this past Friday that Phillips would be out for 4-5 weeks with a fractured cheekbone:

This, in some people’s view, may have been a blow to West Ham and their hopes of signing Phillips.

However, a fresh report from the Evening Standard on Tuesday suggests that the Londoners will still try and sign the Liverpool man in January:

West Ham are prepared to push ahead with a move for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips in January, despite his recent injury.
