Will Rafa Benitez leave Newcastle for West Ham?
On Wednesday, to no one’s surprise, David Moyes left West Ham having kept the Hammers in the Premier League.
Right now, West Ham very much have the feeling of a crisis club and it is far from clear what direction they wish to take.
In their statement confirming David Moyes’ departure, West Ham intimated that they would have a new manager in place within 10 days.
However, after holding talks with Paulo Fonseca, it looks like the Portuguese coach was simply looking to grab a pay rise at Shakhtar Donetsk.
On Thursday The Times, report that: “West Ham plan to hold talks with Benítez if Newcastle United grant them permission to speak with their manager.”
Should Newcastle fans be worried about Rafa Benitez?
These are likely to be worrying times for Newcastle supporters, after Rafa Benitez has done so well with the Toon.
First bringing them back to the Premier League as champions was an achievement, a 10th placed finish in England’s top flight this past season was hugely impressive.
The ownership situation at Newcastle makes Rafa Benitez’s job very hard, but he does have an affinity with the fans, which has not always been the case for the Spaniard since leaving Liverpool.
Rafa Benitez would cost 5 million pounds
Benitez has one year left on his current Newcastle contract and according to The Times, would cost five million pounds in compensation.
The former Inter Milan and Real Madrid coach has been in discussions with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley regarding a new deal but much depends on transfer budget.
It will be fascinating to see how this pans out. The most likely scenario appears to be that Benitez stays and West Ham widen their search to the likes of Manuel Pellegrini, Julian Nagelsmann and David Wagner.
