West Ham reportedly set to offer Declan Rice new deal to ward off potential interest from Chelsea in January

Chelsea linked with Declan Rice

Despite his tender years, Declan Rice has been a mainstay in West Ham’s midfield for some time now.

All told, the 21-year-old has notched 115 appearances across all competitions for the Hammers.

So impressive has Rice been off late, meanwhile, that he has actually been handed the captain’s armband by David Moyes on a number of occasions.

Rice has also become an integral member of Gareth Southgate’s England set-up, notching 10 appearances since his debut in March of 2019.

Such clear quality and potential has seen Rice pique the attention of one of the Premier League’s heavy-hitters.

The club in question comes in the form of Chelsea, who were heavily linked with the midfielder during the summer transfer window.

West Ham to offer Rice more money

In the end, evidently, no deal was forthcoming, though it was reported that Rice was in fact pushing for a move to Stamford Bridge.

This would suggest that the midfielder and Chelsea could well be keen to thrash out a transfer during the upcoming winter window.

West Ham, though, appear to be doing everything they can to prevent that from happening.

According to Ian McGarry, speaking on the latest edition of the Transfer Window Podcast, the Irons are set to offer Rice a fresh deal, in an attempt to ward off the expected interest of Chelsea in January.

The offer would reportedly not see Rice’s contract, which runs until 2024, extended, but instead a more lucrative financial package and improved terms offered:

West Ham to their credit, have offered Declan rice and his representatives the chance to come and discuss an upgrade on his current deal.

Now Duncan his current deal actually was extended in December 2018 until 2024. Now my understanding is that the upgrade itself will not necessarily be an extension of that contract because obviously that is already long term.  Plus, I understand there’s a one-year option on both sides to extend to 2025.

What they will do is offer him a pay rise and better terms and bonuses, in order to try and keep Chelsea at bay in terms of any move in January.

McGarry, however, goes on to speculate that the offer may well be rebuffed, due to Rice’s ambitions:

I’m not sure that it’s necessarily going to work in terms of Declan Rice’s ambitions. But given the criticism West Ham come under generally, with their transfer policy everything else, it does seem like a positive move on their part with regards to ensuring that, well first of all the player is enticed to stay. But I suppose as well, of course, an updated contract means they can ask for more money for Rice if Chelsea do come knocking again in January.
