West Ham end interest in Fofana after £33 million rejected bid / Saint-Etienne attempting to avoid another Saliba mistake

West Ham end interest in Fofana after £33 million rejected bid / Saint-Etienne attempting to avoid another Saliba mistake

Moving On

West Ham have reportedly decided to end their pursuit of 19-year-old Saint-Etienne defender Wesley Fofana.

Both West Ham and Leicester City have pursued similar defensive targets this window. Leicester had their own bid rejected by the French club earlier in the window.

19-year-old Fofana partnered now Arsenal defender William Saliba last season. The pair built up a formidable partnership and were certainly the brightest part of a struggling Les Verts side.

The reported final bid from West Ham for Fofana, including add-ons, totalled £33 million. The Hammers are so far yet to spend beyond making Tomas Soucek’s move from Slavia Prague permanent.

With two games and two losses in the league, David Moyes will be desperate for reinforcements. The West Ham manager will also miss the next couple of games after positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

West Ham play host to Wolves on Sunday in a difficult fixture. Whilst Moyes will be unable to bring any signings in before the match, a third successive loss would see pressure intensify on the recruitment staff to make moves.

Not another Saliba

Saint-Etienne sold then 18-year-old William Saliba to Arsenal for a £27 million fee.

After the sale, it was revealed by the ASSE president that he regretted selling the young Frenchman.

Saliba is yet to make his senior debut for Arsenal this season, but the hype around the defender has been unrelenting.

With ASSE starting exceptionally this season, winning 3 and drawing one, losing Fofana will be the last thing coach Claude Puel will want.
