Transfer expert provides Arsenal striker update ahead of summer window

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Arsenal’s hunt for a striker ahead of the summer.

After losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal have just Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as senior centre-forwards options.

Both of these players are currently set to depart the Emirates on frees in the summer. But even if they do not, Lacazette’s lack of goals and Nketiah’s lack of quality in the Premier League means the Gunners would probably still need a new no.9 in the summer even if both of their current options were to pen new deals.

Arsenal’s search for a striker

Now, as mentioned above, an insight into Arsenal’s striking targets has been provided by Fabrizio Romano, who was speaking on the latest episode of his Here We Go podcast.

Romano reports that Arsenal were interested in both Darwin Nunez of Benfica and Jonathan David of Lille in January, and the north Londoners could go back in for the pair in the next window.

It is added that where Arsenal finish in the league will be key to understanding what type of striker they can sign:

“They're going on exploring the market for many strikers. They are in the process. We know that in January they wanted to explore the possibility for Jonathan David for from Lille but it was impossible in January. Let’s see in the summer, many top, top clubs want Jonathan David from Lille.

“Another player Darvin Nunez, important goal with Benfica in Champions League, important striker, he’s scoring loads of goals, he has this kind of mentality from Uruguay, he's a fighter. So he’s a very good player and Arsenal also had some contact with his agent in January, so let's see what happens because West Ham also wanted him and also West Ham will go for a top striker in the summer

“So will be summer of strikers and Darwin Nunez could be one of the possibilities together with Jonathan David. Arsenal are in the process, but they will take their time and they hope to secure a Champions League football spot, which is key to understand what kind of striker they will sign.”
