Tottenham’s Serge Aurier confirms desire to finish career at PSG

Serge Aurier: A player that splits opinion amongst the Spurs faithful

It certainly feels a long time ago now, but at the beginning of the 2019/2020 season, Spurs were relying on three options in the right back position, following the departure of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

Juan Foyth had played at right back for Argentina. Kyle Walker-Peters finally received his first team chance at the start of the season. And, Serge Aurier was in a position to make the position his own.

Under Jose Mourinho, Serge Aurier did just that, playing virtually ever game under the former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager.

So much so, that Aurier became an integral part of the Tottenham side under Mourinho, with much of their attacking play going through the Ivory Coast captain.

Nevertheless, there are many Spurs fans that feel Aurier is a liability defensively and often fails to track back.

Serge Aurier on a PSG return

In an interview broadcast on Canal Plus Sports Africa this past Sunday – as reported by L’Equipe – Serge Aurier confirmed his desire to return to Paris Saint Germain to finish his career.

Aurier played for PSG between 2014 and 2017. Before signing for Spurs on a contract that expires in 2022.

The Ivory Coast international said: “It’s even the project… I would like to finish in Paris because it is the club of my heart. I recently read that people had associated me with Marseille in relation to a sentence I said, but they did not quite understand what I meant.”

Aurier continued: “For Paris, there is an incomplete feeling. It has been my club since I was a child, it was a dream for me to finish in Paris and it is not over. If I can finish my career in Paris, it would be with pleasure. I could have stayed there all my career. I’m PSG by far, it’s still my club and it won’t budge.”

Will Spurs be keen to sell Serge Aurier in the next transfer window?

Whilst it feels churlish to discuss transfer moves right now, this interview feels like a “come-and-get-me plea” from Aurier.

PSG are strongly rumoured to be losing their first choice right back in Thomas Meunier to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer, so could be keen to return for Aurier.

German defender Thilo Kehrer played at right back for PSG in their 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund, which was their last competitive match.

However, it is open to debate whether Aurier is of the level required by a side looking to win the Champions League.

And the right back also soured his time with the club with an infamous Periscope incident that featured him ridiculing his then coach Laurent Blanc.

Tottenham loaned out Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton and could well be keen on moving Aurier on and replacing the right back when there is next a transfer window.

Juan Foyth initially impressed Jose Mourinho with a performance at Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The Argentine then fell out of favour with a disastrous first half performance against Norwich at Carrow Road in the Premier League.
