Tottenham reportedly interested in Mainz’s Jean-Philippe Mateta

Recent reports stemming from Italy have credited Premier League outfit Tottenham with an interest in Jean Philippe Mateta.

Who is Jean-Philippe Mateta?

Mateta, born in Sevran, began his footballing career in France with LB Chateauroux.

The forward then made the move to Lyon in 2016.

But, following just a short spell with the French powerhouse, the 23-year-old was moved on to German outfit Mainz, for a fee believed to be around £7.2m.

And Mateta has since gone on to enjoy a fairly prolific stint in Germany.

All told, the France under-21 international has notched 63 appearances across all competitions for Jan-Moritz Lichte’s side. Across these outings, he has scored 27 and assisted five.

It is the current season, though, which has seen Mateta take his production to new heights.

With just nine appearances under his belt, the hitman has already notched an impressive 10 goals and one assist for Die Nullfünfer.

Do Tottenham need another striker?

Such impressive form, meanwhile, has now seen Mateta linked with some top clubs.

As per a recent report from Italian outlet Calciomercato, both Napoli and Tottenham ‘think of’ Mateta’.

The report doesn’t offer any further details regarding a potential fee. Given his age, form and the fact that the attacker is contracted to Mainz until 2023, though, it is safe to assume that Mateta wouldn’t come cheap.

Do Tottenham really need to be in the market for another centre-forward, though?

Spurs recently secured the services of Carlos Vinicius on a season-long loan from Benfica.

The Brazilian is yet to open his account for the club, but has looked decent across his sporadic time on the pitch.

The only negative for the Lilywhites when it comes to Vinicius is that their option to buy the hitman is believed to stand at just over £40m.

This steep fee may prompt Spurs to look elsewhere next summer, but, as mentioned above, if Mateta keeps up his current goalscoring exploits throughout 2020/21, it is hard to see Mainz letting him go on the cheap.
