Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants to sign Sevilla’s Diego Carlos

Tottenham’s backline

It’s fair to say that Tottenham do not currently have the best defence.

Toby Alderweireld, who once formed one of the Premier League’s top centre-back pairings with Jan Vertonghen, has looked somewhat off the pace of late.

Joe Rodon, whose only experience of Premier League football has come this season, is a solid player, but the Welshman’s inexperience has shone through on a number of occasions in a Spurs shirt.

Elsewhere, Eric Dier is fairly average, with his lack of pace and poor decision-making often costly.

And finally, Davinson Sanchez, though a decent defender on his day, is fairly erratic and undisciplined.

This has led to Spurs’ backline emerging as arguably their weakest area across the campaign to date, as the Lilywhites’ attack continues to thrive through Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

Tottenham eyeing Diego Carlos

So, it would make a fair bit of sense for Tottenham to prioritise signing a centre-half in the upcoming summer transfer window.

And, if recent reports stemming from Spain prove true, then it appears the north Londoners are already doing exactly that.

According to La Razon, Jose Mourinho is interested in Sevilla centre-back, Diego Carlos.

Carlos, 28, joined Sevilla in the summer of 2019 from French outfit, Nantes.

The Brazilian has since formed a solid partnership with Jules Kounde at the heart of the La Liga outfit’s backline.

Carlos is contracted to Sevilla until 2024, with La Razon claiming that his deal contains a €75m release clause.

However, it is also suggested that a transfer could be negotiated with Spurs for a significantly lower fee, especially if Davinson Sanchez is included in the deal.
