The latest on Manchester City’s pursuit of Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly

A fresh update regarding Manchester City’s reported pursuit of Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly has emerged on Thursday.

Koulibaly’s Napoli stint

Koulibaly has been plying his trade at the Stadio San Paolo for just over six years now.

Napoli signed the powerful stopper from Belgian outfit Genk for a fee just shy of £7m – a sum which has since proven a real bargain.

Koulibaly has cemented himself as an absolutely integral member of the Naples-based outfit’s backline, whilst also earning a name as one of the best centre-halves in Europe.

All told, Koulibaly has notched 246 appearances across all competitions for the Azzurri, helping to guide the club to a Supercoppa Italiana title and, more recently, the Coppa Italia.

Latest on Man City’s Koulibaly pursuit

If Manchester City get their way, though, Koulibaly will be plying his trade at the Etihad next season.

The stopper has been linked with a move to Manchester for some time now.

However, the main stumbling block in any potential deal appears to be the fee.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has seemingly opened to selling Koulibaly, despite having previously suggested that it would take €90 million for the Partenopei to part with the defender:

“Kalidou is a great person, I would be terribly sad to lose him. But there is a time for everything, even to move apart. “But the €90m is not on the table and so it takes two to make a deal.”

Such a steep valuation doesn’t appear to have put Man City off, though.

As per an update from The Athletic’s Sam Lee on Thursday, the Sky Blues are still planning to sign Koulibaly, though negotiations are yet to reach a breakthrough.

In terms of a potential fee for the 29-year-old, it is added that De Laurentiis informed Koulibaly that he can leave for €80 million.

Man City are reportedly prepared to push towards that figure once bonuses are included, suggesting the initial fee is unlikely to be as high as €80m.

Crucially, The Athletic also claim that City and Koulibaly already have an agreement in place.
