Xherdan Shaqiri & Liverpool
It’s almost a done deal for Liverpool.
According to the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce on Friday morning, Xherdan Shaqiri’s move to Anfield from Stoke is within touching distance.
The big news on Friday morning is that Liverpool have “triggered” Shaqiri’s Stoke exit by offering to pay the Swiss star’s release clause.
On Friday Shaqiri is set to have his Liverpool medical.
With no problems expected to arise, Shaqiri could soon be unveiled as Jurgen Klopp’s third signing of the summer.
It’s believed that Liverpool will pay £13.5 million to sign Shaqiri.
Jurgen Klopp & Shaqiri
In the Times on Thursday, Liverpool fans were told that Jurgen Klopp has admired Shaqiri for years.
Before joining Stoke, Shaqiri had a spell at Bayern Munich.
Klopp, who was the Borussia Dortmund keeper at the time, has reportedly “followed the player” since.
Shaqiri joined the Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in 2012 for a fee of around £10 million.
During his time in Germany Shaqiri played 81 games scoring 17 and assisting 19. He also won the Champions League once, Bundesliga three times and German Cup twice.
The broadsheet said that the Shaqiri deal could be wrapped up by Sunday.
Will Shaqiri get into Liverpool’s XI?
Should the Shaqiri deal go through as expected, Liverpool will plug the hole left by Philippe Coutinho’s Barcelona switch in January.
However it won’t be straightforward for Shaqiri to walk into the Liverpool team.
With the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ahead of him in the pecking order, the Swiss star will have to work hard to earn a starting berth with the Reds.
