Lucas Torreira & Arsenal
It looks a nailed on certainty that Sampdoria defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira will join Arsenal this summer.
Torreira, a 22-year-old defensive midfielder, emerged as one of the breakout stars in Serie A this past season.
The South American’s combination of tenacity, passing range and eye for goal having proven crucial to the fortunes of Marco Giampaolo’s men.
Torreira started 36 of Samp’s 38 league outings, racking up 4 goals and an assist in the process.
Sampdoria basically ‘confirm’ Arsenal deal
On Tuesday night, Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has spoken openly about Torreira’s likely move to Arsenal.
Asked about Torreira’s future, Sampdoria chief Ferrero made the following comments on Italian TV:
Torreira has left for €30million, I bought him from Pescara when nobody believed in him.
We took a gamble on him and we won, paying just €3million. ‘The money that comes in will be used to capitalise the company.
Torreira’s contract at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris contains a 25 million euro release clause, but it is reported that this fee has to be paid in full within 60 days of a deal being agreed.
Arsenal’s summer deals
Arsenal will look a whole lot different next season.
Emery has replaced Arsene Wenger in the dugout, while the new boss seems to be conducting an overhaul of much of the playing staff.
Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Swiss international Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus.
Lichtsteiner have moved to the English capital on a free transfer after seven seasons in Turin.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos is also on course to join the Gunners this summer.
Sokratis, 29, is looking to leave Borussia Dortmund to gain for game time in north London.
Bayer Leverkusen goalie Bernd Leno is also on his way Arsenal target this summer.
