Saint-Etienne blame Arsenal for William Saliba not returning on loan

Saliba returns to Arsenal

Arsenal secured William Saliba’s services in the summer of 2019.

However, the centre-back was immediately loaned back to his previous club, Saint-Etienne, for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign.

Saliba then returned to north London over the summer, amid the expectation that, despite his tender years, the 19-year-old would be a fairly regular contributor for Mikel Arteta’s side.

However, since making the move to England, Saliba has failed to make a single senior appearance for the Gunners, even in the League Cup.

Saliba staying put

This, of course, suggests that, for now at least, Saliba isn’t too high up in Arsenal’s centre-back pecking order. Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, recently attempted to explain how the north Londoners are aiming to best aid the stopper’s development.

In turn, what looked the best option for the Frenchman was some form of loan move.

And, on deadline day, Premier League outfit Fulham were tipped for such a swoop.

When all was said and done, however, a move failed to materialise for Saliba, who now looks set to spend at least the next few months in north London.

Along with Fulham, though, it appears that another club also expressed an interest in the teen.

The outfit in question? Saliba’s former club, Saint-Etienne.

And, after also missing out on a loan swoop for the Frenchman, the Ligue 1 outfit have since moved to hit out at Arsenal:

“Long before the transfer window closed, AS Saint-Etienne had reached an agreement with William Saliba and accepted Arsenal’s offer for a one-season loan.

“Unfortunately, all the administrative conditions could not be met in time, in England, for the completion of the deal.

“The disappointment is great for ASSE and William Saliba, who was particularly determined to return to a club where he has flourished.”
