Revealed: The player Erik ten Hag wants to lead Manchester United project next season

Reports coming out of Spain have credited Manchester United with an interest in FC Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong signed for Barcelona back in the summer of 2019.

The Spanish powerhouse are understood to have paid around £77m to bring the midfielder to the Camp Nou on the back of a starring campaign, in which he helped Ajax reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Since his move to Catalonia, though, de Jong has struggled to consistently showcase the abilities that made him such a desirable asset for Barcelona in the first place.

Not all of the blame can be put on the Dutchman for this, with Barcelona as a club having long been in the midst of something of a lull, with La Blaugrana now onto their 3rd permanent manager since de Jong joined the club.

Such speculation had since died down.

However, the front cover of Spanish outlet Sport on Saturday assured that Erik ten Hag wants to bring de Jong to Manchester United to be the face of his Red Devils project from next season on.

Barcelona’s midfield

The English copy of the report goes into further detail, too, claiming that, whilst Barcelona’s midfield for next season looks set ahead of the imminent arrival of Franck Kessie, de Jong’s future remains unknown.

It is added that Barca have been linked with Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler, who is out of contract in 2023 and, as a result, could come at a reduced price.

So, given La Blaguarna’s recent financial issues, perhaps they would be better served cashing in on de Jong and signing Soler for a fraction of the price.
