Revealed: Manchester City’s stance on Raheem Sterling leaving in January

Raheem Sterling falls out of favour at Manchester City

Towards the end of last season, Raheem Sterling fell out of favour at Manchester City.

The Englishman, once one of City’s star men, was used as a bit-part player in the Sky Blues’ first-team setup.

Instead, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan were all being deployed ahead of Sterling in City’s more high-profile games.

In the Premier League, the English international did continue to play regularly, but this was due to the Citizens having had the title wrapped up and Pep Guardiola therefore opting to use his first-choice stars in key Champions League clashes.

Sterling’s reduced role, meanwhile, has continued into the 2021/22 season as well.

Across City’s last six league outings, he has started just one game, notching 39 minutes of action across the other five ties.

Manchester City’s stance on Sterling move in January

With the 26-year-old remaining on the fringes, and set to have just one year remaining on his contract come the summer, speculation around Sterling’s future has already begun to swirl, with FC Barcelona one of the clubs most heavily linked of late:

However, it does not look as though Barcelona, nor any other club, will be poaching the England international from the Etihad in January.

As per ESPN, Man City will resist any approach from Barca to sign Sterling this winter, with it assured that the Sky Blues will not consider any offer for the winger, be it permanent or on loan, with Sterling remaining a key member of Guardiola’s squad.
