Aaron Ramsdale throws down gauntlet; challenges Bernd Leno for number one status at Arsenal

Arsenal’s latest addition

“Every time I’ve played here I’ve walked out and said: Imagine this being your home each week.

Hopefully I can play and play well in front of a full, packed Emirates Stadium. I can’t stop smiling. It’s one of those days.”

To say that Aaron Ramsdale is chomping at the bit to begin the next chapter of his career would be a massive understatement.

The England U21 international has had a whirlwind summer over the last few months; first making Gareth Southgate’s final squad for Euro2020, and now securing a move from relegated Sheffield United to one of the giants of English football.

And it has not taken him long to endear himself to the Arsenal faithful, courtesy of comments in his first official interview since joining the club in a £24 million deal.

Sitting down and speaking with the club’s social media team, Ramsdale made his intentions clear when it comes to what the fans can expect from him;

“Competition is key and it’s also a great place to be. Bernd’s done a fantastic job over recent seasons and I’m here to push him all the way and take his shirt.”

Fears amongst the Arsenal fanbase that the club chucked a sizable fee (more than they spent on Bernd Leno) on Ramsdale only for him to deputize behind the German international have certainly been put to bed.

Despite the status of his former club and plenty of initial noise that suggested Ramsdale is not good enough for the Gunners, the data behind the 23-year-old and his strong ability to play out from the back paint the picture of a modern keeper that Mikel Arteta could certainly look towards as a vital long-term puzzle piece in the Arsenal project.
With uncertainty surrounding Bernd Leno all summer, the financial investment in Ramsdale not only provides valuable competition in the short-term, but a homegrown replacement already in the door should Leno move on in the immediate future.
