Pep Guardiola speaks out over Bernardo Silva’s Man City future

Pep Guardiola has recently offered his verdict on Bernardo Silva leaving Manchester City

Bernardo Silva wanted Man City exit

Bernardo Silva would join Manchester City from AS Monaco back in July of 2017.

The Portuguese has since gone on to feature over 200 times for the Sky Blues, scoring 36 and assisting 34 in the process.

Silva, now 27, has had a mixed stint at Man City. His 2018/19 campaign was arguably his best in England, but his form dipped shortly after that – in part due to Silva being used more on the right-wing, instead of as a central attacking midfielder where he clearly works best.

Silva’s form has since picked up in 2021/22, with an impressive showing under his belt in the 1-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend.

However, it is worth remembering that Pep Guardiola himself confirmed in August that Silva was one of the players eyeing a potential Etihad exit this summer.

Guardiola on Silva’s City future

No move would materialised for Silva and he has instead stayed put for now, which is probably a huge boost for Man City given his form and their recent injuries to the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden.

Now though, Guardiola has once again been speaking about Silva’s future.

And though he believes Silva is happy, Guardiola does not seem closed off to the idea of Silva departing the club at the end of this season:

“I never forget the second Premier League we won, with 98 points, he was the best player in England. He was nominated [for an award] but he was the best.

“After that season, later he dropped a little bit, he was not in the position he prefers but now he’s back and hopefully he can help us.

“If, at the end, he wants to leave and decides [to go] the only thing I can say is that the guy or the club that gets Bernardo is going to take one of the best players in the world.

“Is he happier? You cannot play in this way if you are not happy, it’s impossible.”
