Official: Everton sign James Rodriguez from Real Madrid

Premier League outfit Everton have this evening confirmed the impressive signing of James Rodriguez from Real Madrid.

Real outcast

Colombian international Rodriguez endured yet another disappointing campaign in the Spanish capital in 2019/20.

After returning to the Bernabeu last summer on the back of a hit-and-miss two-year loan stint with Bayern Munich, the 29-year-old was handed another chance to prove himself by Zinedine Zidane.

And, though Real enjoyed a fine domestic season which saw Los Blancos wrestle back La Liga supremacy from Barcelona, Rodriguez, on an individual level, once again struggled.

Sitting behind the likes of Isco, Eden Hazard and the recently-returned Marco Asensio in the attacking pecking order in Madrid, the former Monaco man managed starts in just 5 of his side’s 38 league outings.

In turn, Rodriguez went on to find the net on a paltry single occasion across the entirety of the campaign.

Goodison switch

As such, ahead of the 2020/21 season, it had since come as little surprise to see Rodriguez linked with a fresh departure from the Bernabeu.

Whether it be on a permanent basis or via a loan, it was widely assumed that the South American would be on the move once again this summer.

In turn, a whole host of clubs, including Manchester United, had been tipped to swoop for his signature.

Recent weeks, however, saw another Premier League outfit take a clear lead in the race for the attack-minded midfielder.

The side in question? Everton.

Carlo Ancelotti previously spent time in charge of Rodriguez, overseeing some of the finest form of the Colombian’s career during the 2014/15 campaign.

And, as outlined above, the pair’s reunion has this evening been confirmed.

In an announcement across the club’s social media platforms a short time ago, Everton announced that Rodriguez has joined the club on a permanent basis.

The 29-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a 2-year deal at Goodison Park, with a club option for a further season.

He is thought to have set the Toffees back a fee of around £22 million.

Rodriguez’s arrival of course marks the 2nd impressive piece of business on the part of Everton over the last couple of days, after the Merseysiders also closed a deal for Napoli midfielder Allan over the weekend.
