Newcastle & the 20 million pound mystery striker
With a week to go in the January transfer window it’s time for Newcastle United to make moves.
After 24 games, Newcastle only have 23 points on the board. They are 15th in the table and just one point above the bottom three.
And at the same time Amanda Staveley’s takeover bid seems to be dead in the water.
Yet Newcastle fans have been enjoying a game this week: name the 20 million pound mystery striker.
For the past few days rumours have been swirling around Tyneside that Rafa Benitez is about to break the club’s transfer record on a striker.
And now that player has been identified as Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen.
Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen
On Tuesday night the Newcastle Chronicle revealed the following:
Newcastle United are locked in talks to sign Feyenoord star Nicolai Jorgensen.
The 27-year-old Danish international is wanted by Rafa Benitez to sharpen up his frontline and a valuation of £20million has been placed on the shoulders of the 10-goal striker.
One valuation by United is already believed to have been rejected by Feyenoord and deemed too low. However, United aren’t walking away from the deal yet.
The 27-year-old Scandinavian attacker has scored 26 goals in 43 games for Feyenoord since joining the club in 2016 from FC Copenhagen. He also has 28 caps for his country, scoring eight goals for Denmark.
In the Dutch league this season he has five goals in his last six appearances, and seven goals overall.
IF Rafa's backed in this window (as it seems Ashley intends to) the dynamic will shift in second half of the season. There'll be mitigation but RB judged on these calls. Won't just be a case of 'What can he do, he wasn't backed?' Will make for interesting second half!
