Newcastle turn attentions to France as Ligue 1 midfield star piques January interest

Newcastle turn attentions to France as Ligue 1 midfield star piques January interest

Word stemming from the European media on Thursday has named Newcastle United as having joined the lengthy list of clubs interested in the signing of Seko Fofana.

Howe arrives

The highly-anticipated new era at Newcastle of course took a major step forward early last week, courtesy of the long-awaited appointment of the club’s new manager.

On the back of the big-money Saudi takeover on Tyneside, and ensuing dismissal of Steve Bruce last month, speculation had been rampant regarding just who would be entrusted with the reins on the bench at St. James’ Park.

A whole host of tacticians, including the likes of Unai Emery and Paulo Fonseca, were tipped for the post over the last couple of weeks.

On Monday afternoon, though, much to the relief of the Magpies faithful, confirmation was finally forthcoming that the club’s wealthy new owners had made their decision.

The man chosen to replace Bruce? Eddie Howe:

Fofana eyed

Howe, in turn, is expected to be afforded a considerable war chest with which to add some much-needed reinforcements to his new squad of players in January, with Newcastle, as things stand, firmly entrenched in the Premier League relegation battle.

And, as outlined above, if the latest word stemming from the media in France is anything to go by, then one such potential addition appears to have been identified.

The player in question? Seko Fofana.

Fofana, 26, is currently in the midst of a starring debut campaign in Ligue 1.

The Ivorian, a midfield all-rounder, made the move to RC Lens during the summer, and has since gone on to light up the French top-flight, playing a key role in pushing his new club to the dizzying heights of 2nd in the Ligue 1 table.

His efforts were rewarded back in September, when Fofana was named the division’s Player of the Month, sparking understandable interest from abroad in his signature:

The likes of AC Milan and Atalanta are both understood to be keeping a close eye on developments at Lens, but, as outlined above, look set to face stern competition from the Premier League.

This comes with Newcastle the latest club named as keen admirers of Fofana’s talents, ahead of a potential winter swoop.

Significantly, however, it is added that a transfer actually coming to fruition in January looks altogether unlikely as things stand, with those in a position of power at Lens ready to stand firm on their latest midfield standout.
