Newcastle turn attentions towards out-of-favour Liverpool star amid January striker search

Newcastle turn attentions towards out-of-favour Liverpool star amid January striker search

Newcastle turn to Divock Origi

Newcastle United continues to approach the January transfer window with gusto after moving quickly for Atlético Madrid’s Kieran Trippier, and has now set their sights on Liverpool frontman Divock Origi.

The untimely injury to key center-forward Callum Wilson was a hammer blow to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s attempts at arresting the poor performance levels at St. James’ Park this term, and Origi could be just the tonic needed on Tyneside.

Despite building a cult-hero status at Anfield during his time with Liverpool, Origi has hardly hit the heights that many once expected him capable of both in Belgium and across the continent.

But regardless of his struggles to really find firm footing on Merseyside, Origi has provided the goods in a cadre of key moments under Jürgen Klopp, which speaks to the ability he does possess hiding under the surface.

Should Newcastle seal a deal for the 26-year-old Oostende-native, he may finally have a real chance at establishing himself as a first-choice option in the Premier League.

Magpies press forward with recruitment plans

With Trippier all but in the door at St. James’ Park, PIF-backed Newcastle continues to push forward with their January recruitment plans as relegation looms large over the Tyne.

The Magpies recently submitted a bid for want-away Everton left-back Lucas Digne, with the French international being added to a number of options that the club has viewed as attainable this month.

Newcastle has also lodged bids for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos and SC Freiburg’s highly-touted German starlet Nico Schlotterbeck, but both advances were quickly rebuffed.

Regardless of the massive financial muscle now behind Howe’s outfit, Newcastle will still find it tricky to bring in a certain caliber of player, given that their situation as a Premier League club is hardly safe at current.
