Newcastle ready to meet €80m release clause for Porto star in January

Newcastle ready to meet €80m release clause for Porto star in January

Recent reports stemming from Portugal suggest that Newcastle could be set to spend big on one player during the winter transfer window.

Newcastle become rich

It was of course announced recently that the Magpies have been bought out by the SAPIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media.

This means that Newcastle United now have the richest owners in world football.

Inevitably, this has led to countless players from around the globe seeing their names linked with a move to St. James’ Park, despite the takeover, at the time of writing, being just a couple of weeks old.

Just some of the names rumoured to be interesting Newcastle are FC Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho, PSG’s Mauro Icardi, Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey, Chelsea star Timo Werner and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Newcastle eye Diaz

And now, another star has found himself linked with a move to Tyneside.

According to the Daily Mail, citing reports from Portugal, FC Porto’s Luis Diaz could be one of Newcastle’s first mega-money signings following their takeover, with it claimed that the North East outfit are prepared to meet the €80m (£67.5m) release clause in Diaz’s contract during the January transfer window.

But who is Luis Diaz? The Colombian has been plying his trade with Porto since 2019.

The Portuguese powerhouse are understood to have paid somewhere in the region of £6.5m for his services.

Since his move to Portugal, Diaz has gone on to make 108 appearances for Porto, across which he has managed to score 32 goals and provide 14 assists.

The 24-year-old is naturally a left-sided player, who either lines out as a winger in a 4-3-3 or as a left-sided midfielder in a 4-4-2.

He has also made 29 appearances for the Colombian national team, netting on seven occasions thus far.
