Newcastle set to sign Javier Manquillo
Spanish right back Javier Manquillo has already had a nomadic career and looks set to join Newcastle.
Mundo Deportivo report on Tuesday morning that Manquillo is no longer wanted by Atletico Madrid, who have been loaning the right back out in recent seasons.
Manquillo has spent loan spells at Liverpool, Marseille and Sunderland.
In 2016/2017, Manquillo played for Sunderland in the Premier League, making 20 appearances in total and scoring one goal.
Manquillo set to leave Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid are currently in the process of dealing with a transfer ban, nevertheless, Manquillo is nowhere near Diego Simeone’s first team plans.
Manquillo is not currently training with the Atletico Madrid first team in pre-season and the La Liga giants have no problem with his “disassociation” from the club.
The former Spain Under-19 right back will sign a three-year deal at Newcastle, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Rafa Benitez key to the deal
Javier Manquillo is now expected to travel to Newcastle to sign on with the Toon.
Reports in Spain confirm that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez was key to the deal in bringing Javier Manquillo to St James’ Park.
Manquillo came through the ranks at Atletico Madrid but played just 17 times for the La Liga side.
A free transfer with Premier League experience
So far, Manquillo’s best loan spell was at Marseille in 2015/2016.
Last season, Manquillo played left back and right back, with his versatility potentially crucial for Newcastle as they look to build on winning the Championship last season.
If reports are to be believed, and Rafa Benitez was unhappy with how much Newcastle have spent this summer, a free transfer with Premier League experience and with a potential re-sale value, should satisfy Mike Ashley.
Manquillo scored for Sunderland in the final game of the last Premier League season at Chelsea in a 5-1 defeat.
