Chelsea 3 – Newcastle 1
Despite taking the lead at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Newcastle were beaten 3-1 at Chelsea.
Dwight Gayle gave the Blues a scare in the first half when he fired the Magpies into the lead.
But Eden Hazard soon brought Chelsea level. Alvaro Morata headed Chelsea into the lead, while Hazard capped off the win with a panenka penalty.
Newcastle’s goalie rotation
In the past few weeks, Rafa Benitez has been rotating his Newcastle keepers.
Rob Elliot has been the mainstay for the majority of the season, but Newcastle’s last two matches have seen Ken Darlow put on the gloves.
The upshot of Benitez’s changes seems to be that he’s not best pleased with either of his options right now.
Target: Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas
The rumour gathering speed in the past few days is that Newcastle could be about to sign Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas.
Casillas is currently plying his trade in Portugal with Porto, however that’s not going very well.
At the moment, Casillas can’t even get a game for FC Porto.
Porto, top of the Portuguese league on goal difference ahead of Sporting CP, have recently seen Casillas consigned to the bench while 24-year-old Jose Sa has been picked instead of the Real Madrid icon.
Indeed, Sa was in goal on Friday night in the big match with Benfica.
That’s lead to claims that Casillas is being pushed out of Porto. And could he be headed to St James’ Park?
‘Iker Casillas to Newcastle’ was headline news in Portugal over the weekend. Newspaper Jornal de Noticias ran the story on their front page with the headline: “In Newcastle’s plans”.
But will Newcastle get the deal done?
That’s up in the air as Newcastle’s takeover stalls in the background. The Newcastle Chronicle have added:
Sources at United were quick to play down such talk with Casillas having another six months left on his FC Porto contract and the Spain international commanding a huge salary, currently worth around £5million a year.
