Napoli boss hints club may have to sell Man City-linked Koulibaly for ‘numbers’

Recent comments on the part of Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso appear to have handed Manchester City a boost in their pursuit of centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

Napoli standout

Koulibaly has been plying his trade at the Stadio San Paolo for just over six years now, since signing from Belgian outfit Genk for a fee just shy of £7m.

And he has since cemented himself as an absolutely integral member of the Naples-based outfit’s backline, whilst also earning a name as one of the best centre-halves in Europe.

All told, Koulibaly has notched 247 appearances across all competitions for the Azzurri, helping to guide the club to a Supercoppa Italiana title and, more recently, the Coppa Italia.

Gattuso on Koulibaly

The latest of his appearances came on Sunday evening vs Parma in Napoli’s season opener.

The African played the full 90 minutes, as the Partenopei cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Speaking in the aftermath of the clash, meanwhile, Gennaro Gattuso, Napoli’s head coach, was drawn on the future of his star defender.

And, for the most part, Gattuso’s update proved positive from a Manchester City perspective, with the Sky Blues having of course been linked with the 29-year-old for some time now.

The Italian tactician stated that though he would be happy to keep Koulibaly, ‘numbers are important’ for the club and, at this moment, something (a sale) is therefore required:

“I had no doubts, he is one of the strongest champions in the world in his role.

“He has always given me great availability and always trains well. I would be sorry to lose him, both for the man and for the player.

“But you know that numbers are important for clubs and at this moment something needs to be done for numbers, but I’d be happy to keep him.”
