Mikel Arteta coy on possibility of David Luiz staying at Arsenal beyond current contract

Mikel Arteta was unwilling to rule out the possibility of keeping David Luiz beyond his current contract when drawn on the stopper's future on Thursday.
Mikel Arteta coy on possibility of David Luiz staying at Arsenal beyond current contract

Luiz’s Arsenal stint

David Luiz joined Arsenal from London rivals Chelsea in the summer of 2019.

The Gunners are understood to have paid around £8m for the Brazilian’s services.

And Luiz has since gone on to endure something of a mixed stint in north London.

At times, the 33-year-old, especially when operating in a back-five, has added some much-needed experience and quality to Arsenal’s backline.

However, as has so often proven the case throughout his career, Luiz has also made a host of high-profile mistakes, which have cost his side dearly.

Arteta on Luiz extending Arsenal stay

This season, though, with Arsenal attempting to switch to a back-four, Luiz has seemingly slipped down the defensive pecking order somewhat.

Gabriel and Pablo Mari look the favourites for the left-sided centre-back spot, which makes sense given the fact that both are left-footed.

Rob Holding, and William Saliba once he returns from loan, meanwhile, should prove decent options for the right centre-back spot.

So, when taking into account both Luiz’s age, and the fact that his contract is due to run out in the summer, Arsenal’s fans likely assumed that the former PSG man would be on the move upon the season’s end.

However, when drawn on the possibility of Luiz staying put beyond the terms of his current deal earlier today, Mikel Arteta refused to rule it out:

“We will see what happens.

“There are a lot of things happening around the club, a lot of decisions to make. I don’t want to rush any decisions. I just want players to be focused.

“They know that they have six months left or eight months left, whatever it is, some of them a year. They know that. Their contracts are like that, we cannot change that.

“We cannot change all the contracts right now. I think it is time to be focused. We have been through a difficult period in the last few weeks and I just want people to focus on football.

“If you do what you have to do on the football pitch, you will deserve the chance to keep with us if this is what you want.”
