Maurizio Sarri to Arsenal, Luis Enrique to Chelsea

Sarri to Arsenal, Enrique to Chelsea

According to the Sunday Times, Arsenal have decided against appointing Luis Enrique to succeed Arsene Wenger.

Instead, the new frontrunner to take over at Arsenal at the end of the season is the current Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri.

As for Enrique, the former Roma and Barcelona boss is still Premier League bound.

While Arsenal may have shied away from the Spaniard, Chelsea are ready to appoint him as the successor to Antonio Conte.

Why Arsenal don’t want Luis Enrique

So what’s wrong with Enrique?

Why isn’t he the right man to take over at the Emirates Stadium? The Times report:

(Arsenal’s) senior executives consider Enrique an inappropriate fit to the position.

Enrique would have been expensive, with his salary demands exceeding the pay of the man Arsenal invited to step down at the end of this season.

More importantly, it is felt that Enrique’s self-absorbed approach to management would not mesh with the London club’s restructuring strategy.

Should these factors be warning signs for Chelsea as well?

Why Sarri fits the Gunners

The Times also looking into why Sarri is considered more appropriate for Arsenal.

Perhaps the key factor is Sarri’s record in punching above his weight with limited resources.

This season in Serie A, Sarri has lead Napoli to within touching distance of their first Scudetto since the heady days of Diego Maradona.

How Sarri also approaches the game is important. The Times detail:

Sarri’s principal attraction is the form of football he has implemented at Napoli, a front-foot, possession-centred, high-intensity game popular with many neutrals.

Yet there are negatives to Sarri, starting with his lack of English.

Then there’s the fact that prising him from Napoli may not be the easiest.

In reserve, the Times believe that Arsenal’s back-up options are Massimiliano Allegri and Carlo Ancelotti.
