Jose Fonte hands in transfer request
Southampton captain Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request.
The Portuguese centre back has been a rock-like figure for Saints for the past 7 years, but it seems he now feels it’s time to seek pastures new.
At 33, he’s not getting any younger, and probably wants to seize his final chance to play for a bigger club.
Southampton director of football Les Reed told BBC Radio Solent:
‘He’s had several opportunities to improve the contract situation. He’s reserved his right not to do that,” .
“He’s made it very clear he would like to explore the opportunities for a transfer.
“That’s where we are at the moment, Jose wants to leave the club. He’s formally asked for a transfer.”
Man United to make a bid?
The Portuguese centre-half has been on the radar of the Premier League’s big boy for some time now, and was reportedly the subject of a bid from Manchester United last summer.
And given United are still on the hunt for a centre-half, they could well make a bid for the Portuguese this month.
They’re reportedly still weighing up a bid for Benfica’s young centre-half Victor Lindelof, but Fonte would be a ready-made, tried and tested signing.
Without it being said in so many words, this is a clear ‘Come and Get Me Plea’ from Fonte to the Red Devils.
