Manchester United sign Benfica wonderkid
We may be bang slap in the middle of the international break, but Manchester United are being very active in the transfer market.
Portuguese newspaper Record report on Thursday that Manchester United have signed Umaro Embalo from Benfica, for an undisclosed fee.
Embalo has been heavily linked with Manchester United since the Red Devils placed a 5 million pound offer with Benfica in the summer.
Manchester United beat Real Madrid to Umaro Embalo
Manchester United have beaten Real Madrid to the signing of Embalo, who is a forward.
Los Blancos were rumoured to have offered 10 million euros for Embalo. The Record report does not reveal how much Manchester United paid to Benfica.
The Red Devils have been watching Embalo for over a year now.
Jose Mourinho, and his agent Jorge Mendes, have incredible links to all the best young players in Portugal.
Embalo is of Guinean heritage and arrived in Portugal in 2014 for a holiday camp arranged by Benfica.
The young attacker impressed Benfica immediately and earned a place in their academy.
Embalo has been compared to PSG’s Angel Di Maria
Embalo asked to play at Benfica on the right hand side, where he can cut on on his left foot, much like Angel Di Maria.
He has scored five goals in 12 games for the Benfica youth team this season. Embalo has also played twice against Manchester United in the UEFA Youth League this campaign.
He’s scored 15 goals in 18 games for Portugal’s under-17 side.
Embalo will join up with Manchester United’s youth sides on arrival in England.
Manchester United fans will no doubt be heartened by this news as it was felt that Manchester City’s recruitment of youth prospects had surpassed the Red Devils in recent seasons.
Plus signing young attackers from Portugal has worked out exceptionally well for Manchester United in the past.
Benfica supporters have not reacted well to this news – arguing that whilst they are a selling club, losing players from their youth sides is a bad precedent.
