Manchester United in battle with Bayern Munich for defensive midfielder

Manchester United have been linked with a move for RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer recently.

Nicola Schira, as cited by Goal, reports that Manchester United and Bayern Munich are vying for the signature of the RB Leipzig star.

It is added that Ralf Rangnick has recommended the 24-year-old to the Old Trafford board, but the German champions are also eager to secure his services.

In terms of a potential transfer fee, it is believed Laimer could be available for a bargain price this summer given his contract at Leipzig is due to expire in 2023, meaning Die Roten Bullen would have to sell this summer or risk losing him for free next year.

Who is Konrad Laimer?

Laimer joined RB Leipzig all the way back in 2017 from the German outfit’s feeder side, RB Salzburg.

Since then, the now 24-year-old has gone on to feature on 155 occasions for Leipzig, scoring 11 and assisting 18 in the process.

Laimer has been especially impressive in 2021/22, forming a great partnership at the base of Leipzig’s midfield with the more attack-minded Kevin Kampl.

In turn, it is assumed that Laimer would be a great addition to Manchester United’s side as they are in desperate need of a decent defensive midfielder – especially as Nemanja Matic is due to leave the club for free in the summer when his contract expires.

However, though Laimer would be a good purchase, would he actually want to come to United right now?

The club is a mess at the moment and, after losing to Arsenal this past weekend, looks set to miss out on Champions League football next term.

Leipzig and Bayern Munich, on the other hand, are on course to secure a spot in Europe’s most coveted club competition.
