Manchester United have accepted an £8m bid from Aston Villa for Tom Cleverley [Telegraph]

A rumour is spreading like wildfire on Thursday night that Manchester United have accepted an £8m bid from Aston Villa for Tom Cleverley.

The story has been given clout by the Telegraph, who have promulgated the tale as an ‘exclusive’ on their website.

According to the report, written by John Percy:

Paul Lambert is making an ambitious bid for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley after getting the green light from Randy Lerner.

Lambert, the Aston Villa manager, is ready to offer around £8million for the England international as he bids to further strengthen his squad but is facing competition from Hull City and Everton.

Cleverley is a figure for Man United fans to make fun of and scapegoat, and thus the notion that Aston Villa would be willing to sign the England international has seen the transfer rumour spread quickly.

Saying that, were Cleverley to leave Old Trafford today, Louis van Gaal’s limited number of options in midfield would shrink even further, with Ander Herrera still injured alongside Marouane Fellaini.
