Varane linked with Man United

Speculation in England on Wednesday has linked Manchester United with a rather high-profile centre-back addition.

It has of course been clear for some time that the Red Devils are in need of fresh legs at the back.

Harry Maguire is a decent player, but his lack of pace can be a real issue when not paired with a quick centre-back partner.

Outside of Maguire, though, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has very little top quality to choose from. Victor Lindelof is inconsistent and more than capable of the occasional nightmare display, whilst Eric Bailly is too often sidelined with injuries.

So, news that Man United are reportedly well placed to sign Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane in 2021 will no doubt please the club’s fans:

Varane is close to entering the final 18 months of his current Real Madrid deal, and, according to the Manchester Evening News, the stopper recently joined the Base Soccer agency, with whom United have a productive relationship.

Deschamps on Pogba

Elsewhere on the United front, France boss Didier Deschamps has once again been speaking about Paul Pogba, and his situation in Manchester.

Deschamps has been quite vocal regarding his star midfielder during the international break, recently revealing his opinion that Pogba cannot be happy at Old Trafford as things stand, due to a lack of playing time.

Following France’s win over Sweden on Tuesday, though, Deschamps revealed his hope that Pogba’s recent displays for his country can aid such struggles at club level:

“Just see what he was able to do in Portugal and what he did tonight.

“I know him, I know how he works. He has pride and above all he has talent. When you have to defend, he can defend. When he has the opportunity to express himself, he is able to do so.

“Paul is a top-level player and I hope what he did with us will be useful to him when he gets back to his club.”
