Man United to miss out: Tottenham ‘close’ to Sergio Reguilon deal following Mourinho phone call

In a major twist this evening, claims have begun to mount that Tottenham Hotspur are closing on the signing of Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon.

Old Trafford links

Recent weeks have of course seen speculation rampant surrounding the future of left-back Reguilon.

The Spanish international is fresh off the back of a stellar year on loan with Sevilla, during which he once again proved himself to be one of La Liga’s finest in his position.

Reguilon played a crucial role in the impressive campaign enjoyed by Julen Lopetegui’s men, racking up 3 goals and 5 assists across 38 appearances, en route to Europa League glory and a 4th-place finish in the Spanish top-flight.

As such, at most clubs, Reguilon would of course now be expected to return to battle it out for a starting berth over the course of the season ahead.

The problem for the Madrid native, however, is that Zinedine Zidane currently has both Ferland Mendy and Marcelo to choose from for the left-hand side of his backline at the Bernabeu.

And this situation, in turn, has unsurprisingly piqued the interest of a number of clubs across Europe.

To this point, Sevilla and Manchester United had been the sides most persistently tipped to swoop for Reguilon this summer.

The latter, meanwhile, appeared to have taken a clear lead in the race for the gifted stopper over the weekend, after Sevilla switched their attentions to Argentine international Marcos Acuna:

Spurs bound

As such, fans of Manchester United could have been forgiven for getting their hopes up regarding the possibility of Reguilon making the move to Old Trafford over the coming weeks.

As outlined above, however, such a scenario now appears altogether unlikely.

This comes amid claims that the 23-year-old is in fact close to joining one of the Red Devils’ Premier League rivals.

The club in question? Tottenham.

As per a report from the highly reliable David Ornstein, Spurs, in something of a bolt from the blue, are now close to agreeing a deal with Real Madrid to sign Reguilon on a permanent basis.

Though a full agreement has not yet been reached, the transfer coming to fruition is labelled as ‘highly possible’.

The interest of Man United is also mentioned, albeit simply to reaffirm the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have not managed to find a deal with Real Madrid:

HLN journalist Kristof Terreur, meanwhile, has since revealed that Spurs boss Jose Mourinho made contact with Reguilon ‘a few weeks ago’, presumably to gauge his interest in a move to north London.
