Red Devils look to move for Zakaria

Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United looks to get a leg up on bitter domestic rivals Liverpool as the Red Devils are set to open channels with Borussia Mönchengladbach over interest in Swiss international midfielder Denis Zakaria.

The need for United to add quality in the centre of the park at Old Trafford continues under Rangnick as it did in those that came before him. Current midfield options the likes of Fred, Nemanja Matić, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek all come with their faults while regularly proving that upgrades are desperately needed.

According to The Mirror while citing German outlet Sport1, the club’s hierarchy has already had ‘promising discussions’ with Zakaria’s camp which included a conversation on exactly how he would fit in under Rangnick at the Theatre of Dreams.

United have yet to make a formal offer to Gladbach, however, but with the Swiss midfielder’s public admission that he is set to walk out of Borussia-Park when his contract expires at the end of the season, United could well try to put themselves ahead in the queue and manufacture a January move rather than wait for the summer when they have far less control in the situation.

Swiss midfielder in high demand

Manchester United and rivals Liverpool are just two top clubs that currently harbour an interest in Denis Zakaria, with the 25-year-old native of Geneva popping up on radar screens across Europe’s top-five leagues.

Fellow Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund has also been credited with an interest in the Swiss international, while Serie A giants Juventus are also said to be keen despite their existing desire to prize Olympique Lyonnais star Bruno Guimarães to the Allianz Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal has also been previously linked with an interest in Zakaria, whose national team connection to key midfielder Granit Xhaka could certainly leave him in good stead if he was to move to the Emirates. Football.London cited Fußball Transfers earlier today in saying that the Gunners are in contact with the player over a summer move with Arteta thought to be keen on a free acquisition.

What is clear is that the growing dog fight around the future of Denis Zakaria looks primed to heat up rapidly.
