Man United ‘targeting’ RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano

With a deal for Donny van de Beek reportedly all but done, Manchester United are rumoured to have switched their attentions towards defensive reinforcements.

Upamecano signs new Leipzig deal

The player whom the Red Devils are believed to be targeting is RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.

Upamecano, 21, has emerged as one of German football’s standout centre-backs over the last couple of seasons.

All told, the Frenchman has garnered 113 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig, including a number of impressive displays in the Champions League.

Such commanding performances despite his tender years, meanwhile, have understandably piqued the interest of several top clubs.

All of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have previously been named as parties interested in the stopper.

However, any hope such sides maintained of actually securing the centre-back’s services this summer appeared to have been dashed in late July, when Upamecano extended his Leipzig contract until 2023:

Man United targeting Upamecano

Despite the 21-year-old having penned fresh terms just a month ago, though, Manchester United still appear keen to lure Upamecano to Old Trafford this summer.

As per a report from ESPN on Monday:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is targeting RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano to bolster his defensive options at Manchester United.

It is added that Solskjaer is prioritising the addition of a top-quality centre-back to play alongside Harry Maguire next season, with Upamecano understood to be the first-choice target.

The report from ESPN also alludes to Upamecano’s new deal, which, according to reports in Germany, contains a release clause of €42 million.

The clause, though, cannot be activated until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Nevertheless, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to want to sign the Leipzig standout during the current window.
