Fred talks before Roma vs Shakhtar Donetsk
On Tuesday night in the Italian capital, Roma host Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
A 1-0 win would be enough for Roma to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2008.
Roma are unbeaten at home in Europe this season and are yet to concede a Champions League goal at the Stadio Olimpico this campaign.
Before the game Shakhtar midfielder Fred has spoken to the press, and he’s discussed his failed move to Man City.
Fred & Man City
At the start of February, repots from Brazil claimed Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.
City chased Fred in the January window without success.
Fred has given a new interview with ESPN Brazil (as translated by Sport Witness) to clear up the situation with Man City right now, and he’s explained that the Sky Blues move failed because of the Champions League:
(Man City’s offer) existed, yes, and it still exists. There was a process now in the winter window, and they even made a proposal for Shakhtar, but it didn’t happen because of the Champions (League), since I could not play for another team. But there was, yes (an offer).
Guardiola did not talk to me, but there were people from City who talked to my agent.
City are a great team, I would be happy to play there… or at Manchester United as well, at Chelsea, Arsenal, clubs of great tradition in Europe and England.
Shakhtar’s CEO on Fred to Man United
Fred isn’t the only one name-dropping Man United into the conversation.
Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin has spoken to Corriere dello Sport on Tuesday, and he’s also spoken up the possiblity of United beating City to the Fred deal:
Fred isn’t already at Manchester City, but he will surely leave in June. If not to City, then Manchester United.
He’s ready for the next stage, because as well as being good, he’s also very professional. If he asked us to stay another year, we’d let him.
