The race for Gelson Martins
Portuguese paper Correio da Manha are best known for being a tabloid who often get on the wrong side of Cristiano Ronaldo, as was in evidence at Euro 2016.
However Correio da Manha have got involved in some transfer gossip on Friday, claiming an exclusive update on Sporting CP winger Gelson Martins.
Man United v Real Madrid
Earlier this week, Portuguese paper Record name dropped Manchester United and Real Madrid on their front page, claiming the Red Devils and Los Blancos are battling it out for Sporting’s Gelson.
The 21-year-old has been attracting scouts from around Europe for several weeks, having looked impressive in the recent Champions League match against Real Madrid.
He’s a product of the Sporting academy, who broke into the first team last season, starting 13 times in all competitions.
This season Gelson has become a permanent fixture in Jorge Jesus’ starting line-up, and he’s already scored two goals and chalked up four assists.
He’s rejected a contract
As the bog boys circle, Correio da Manha report that Sporting have offered Gelson a new deal.
Sporting offered the player 250,000 euros a year in gross wages.
But that’s been batted away by the player, who wants to receive at least 500,000 euros a year.
Gelson is reportedly on 9,000 euros a month at present, and he’s one of the poorest earners in the first team.
Gelson is under contract until 2021, while he has a 60 million euro release clause.
