Man United outbid Atletico & Monaco for Benfica’s Nico Gaitan, but it’s not enough [Record]

According to Portuguese paper Record on Friday, Manchester United have posted an official bid for Benfica’s Nico Gaitan.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, that bid has however been rejected by Benfica as it fell short of the player’s €45m release clause.

Noticeably, this is the second tie this week in which Louis van Gaal’s side have been linked to Gaitan, amid reports that Benfica are attempting to lock the Argentine attacking midfielder down to a new contract in Lisbon.

26-year-old Gaitan’s current deal expires in the summer of 2016, and the suggestion is that is Benfica cannot get the player to commit to the club now, they may be forced to sell him at this junction in order to get top dollar for their star.

In that regard, Record detail that Man United’s offer for Gaitan was more than bids tabled by rival suitors Atletico Madrid and Monaco, however the offer was still not enough for Benfica to agree to.

It seems that the only way Man United will get the deal over the line before the transfer window closes will be to offer the €45m as stipulated in the South America’s contract.
