A major update on Manchester United's pursuit of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has, on Sunday, been confirmed.

The name of Dutch maestro de Jong, of course, has taken its place front and centre in the headlines across the European media throughout the summer to date.

This comes with the 25-year-old having emerged as the priority target of Premier League heavyweights Manchester United, with a view to the 2022/23 campaign.

Any such move would see de Jong reunited with the man who oversaw the finest form of his career to date, in the form of new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

And, as alluded to above, on the back of weeks of back and forth, will they, won't they negotiations, it appears as though, at long last, Man United are closing on the club's first signing of the summer.

This comes on the back of confirmation courtesy of the Daily Telegraph that the transfer team at Old Trafford have made a 'breakthrough' in talks with their counterparts at the Camp Nou.

A definitive agreement, in turn, is understood to be close to completion, in a transfer expected to be worth a fee in excess of £69 million.

In fact, the Red Devils are hopeful of sealing de Jong's signing by the end of the coming week, a scenario which would allow for the midfielder to link up with his new teammates in Manchester in time for pre-season kicking into gear.
