Man United ‘intensify’ Alex Telles pursuit amid claims Porto star’s agents have flown to Manchester

Alex Telles

Speculation stemming from the Portuguese media on Monday suggests that Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Porto star Alex Telles.

Porto standout

Telles, a 27-year-old left-back, has been plying his trade at the Estádio do Dragão since 2016.

On the back of a difficult couple of seasons spent in Turkey and Italy, Porto opted to hand Telles another opportunity to prove himself in Europe.

And to say that the Brazilian has since gone on to take full advantage of this chance would be putting it lightly.

Telles has rediscovered his brilliant best whilst in Portugal, with the Juventude youth product having established himself as one of the most productive full-backs not only in the Primeira Liga, but across all of European football.

The Porto star’s wand of a left foot has long proven a nightmare to deal with for opposing backlines, as evidenced by Telles’ staggering haul of 23 goals and 45 assists across all competitions over the last 3 seasons combined.

In demand

As such, Telles’ talents have inevitably resulted in long-standing speculation that the stopper is being eyed up by some of Europe’s heavyweights.

In truth, it has come as something of a surprise that the 27-year-old has not yet been pried away from Iberia.

The general assumption, though, has for some time been that this summer is set to mark the one in which Telles finally secures a high-profile transfer.

This comes with the former Inter Milan man’s contract at the Estádio do Dragão set to expire in 2021, and his current employers no doubt keen to secure some form of return for his services.

To this point, the clubs most persistently linked with a move for Telles have been Chelsea and PSG.

In fact, reports in Portugal earlier this summer went as far as to assure that the Brazilian was all set for a move to the latter, after a €25 million deal was agreed upon.

Old Trafford bound?

To this point, however, official announcement of such an agreement has not been forthcoming.

And, as outlined above, this, in turn, appears to have opened the door for another of Europe’s biggest clubs to step forward.

The outfit in question? Manchester United.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the Red Devils have, over recent days, ‘intensified’ their efforts to land Telles.

It is even suggested that the stopper’s representatives have flown to Manchester, in a bid to speed up negotiations.

Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon remains an alternative target for United, but, as things stand, Telles appears first-choice, with a transfer, if the latest speculation is indeed accurate, potentially set to come to fruition by the end of the week.
