With just a little over six weeks until the transfer window reopens, headline news in Iberia on Sunday is that Liverpool are chasing Benfica wing-back Maxi Pereira this January.
News that the Reds are tracking the Uruguayan first emerged in England last week, and the story is being echoed by Portuguese daily A Bola.
The 30-year-old was linked with a move to Anfield in the summer and the Reds could revive their interest, should they be able to land him on the cheap. Crucially, Pereira’s contract at Benfica expires in the summer, and the South American is yet to enter talks with his current employer about an extension.
With Liverpool circling, the current belief is that Pereira is open to staying at Benfica however his agent is pushing for better terms and neither party show any sign of budging.
Looking more broadly at the transfer rumour, the underlying notion is that Liverpool’s backline options remain in need of a boost, with the Reds having concded far too many goals already this campaign.
