Liverpool scouting 21-year-old Brazilian who is open to playing for club

Liverpool are scouting a 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder, it has been reported.

The player in question is Joao Gomes, who is currently plying his trade with Flamengo.

Gomes is a defensive midfielder and has spent his entire career to date on the books of Flamengo.

And now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Gomes is being scouted by Flamengo.

However, Romano adds that there have been no bids or negotiation at this point:

“There’s been fresh speculation about Liverpool’s midfield targets, with one of the main names linked at the moment being Flamengo’s 21-year-old talent Joao Gomes,” Romano said.

“Liverpool have monitored Gomes with their scouts as many other top European clubs did, at the moment there’s nothing else to this story, no official bid or negotiation.

“I think he’s a very good player but he needs some steps before being ready for Liverpool level.”

The player himself, meanwhile, has confirmed he is open to playing for the Reds:

Given Fabinho is Liverpool’s only defensive midfielder and he is getting on in years, it makes sense that Liverpool could be looking to replace/provide support for the South American soon.

However, Liverpool also really need to add a box-to-box option to their ranks if they are going to continue playing a three-man midfield.

The obvious option to fill that void is Jude Bellingham, but so far all of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with the winger.

And given all three of those clubs are probably willing to spend more than Liverpool, the Reds may struggle to lure the Englishman to Anfield.
