Liverpool one of three clubs to make ‘serious’ move for soon-to-be free agent midfielder

Word stemming from the media on Friday suggests that Premier League giants Liverpool have made a move for Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria.

Zakaria, 25, has proven a prominent figure across the January transfer window to date.

This comes with the Swiss international’s contract due to expire at the end of the season, and Zakaria having confirmed that he has no intention to put pen to paper on fresh terms at Borussia-Park.

A whole host of clubs, in turn, have begun to express interest in the deep-lying midfielder, eyeing either a cut-price swoop this month, or alternatively a free agent transfer in the summer.

And now, on Friday, an insight into the favourites to strike a deal has been provided.

As per a report from ESPN, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have joined Bundesliga duo Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the front of the queue for Zakaria.

All three clubs are understood to have made ‘serious approaches’ for the player, whom ‘Gladbach are very much open to sanctioning a departure for this month.

Reds short in midfield

News of those in a position of power at the club making efforts to secure reinforcements to Liverpool’s ranks in the middle of the park will no doubt come as music to the ears of the Reds faithful.

This comes amid a stretch of recent fixtures which have seen Klopp’s current midfield options come in for heavy criticism, owing to a string of sub-par displays.

In the absence of both Thiago Alcantara (injury), and Naby Keita (AFCON), the likes of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all been subjected to the wrath of Liverpool’s supporters.

Is Zakaria, though, who carries out a similar role to that of Fabinho, really the kind of player needed at Anfield?
